The last few days everything that has happened over the last month suddenly hit me. The turbulant times at work, some stresses at home and, on top of that, some random virus (giving me stomach cramps, diziness and headaches) saw me smash into an emotional and physical brick wall. I wasn’t motivated to do anything more than the mundane at work. I ticked off all the core chores at home but nothing more. I skipped any exercise plans and then abandoned planning all together. And, most unusually, I lost any inclination to blog. To read. To tweet. To Instagram. To even go on my computer and pretend.

I knew I wanted to go back to work part-time from before Little H was born. A couple of weeks before my maternity leave started my boss and I even had an informal conversation about what I was thinking and he told me that he could not see any reason why a formal request would not be accepted. Early in my maternity leave I had some moments where I missed my job. Then later, as I had adapted to caring for Little H, I had moments where I doubted my decision. But once I was back in the office in January 2016, I was pretty confident I had made the right decision for me*.

I’m a blogger, a techie, a mum and a commuter. So I think it’d be a safe bet to assume I own a smartphone. To me these amazing devices are a blessing and a curse. They are a distraction when I need to kill time but also when I should be focusing on more important things. They have helped me out in a scrape on more occasions than I can count, yet make me too quick to turn to Google for help. They have allowed me to capture so many pictures of Little H growing up but to the extent I have more than I know what do with!

It’s February 2016 and I’ve been back at work after Maternity Leave for about three weeks. One of the female managers who I don’t really know asks me how I’m getting on. I’m honest and say it’s good to be back but it’s a bit of a shock to the system and I’m still finding my way. She nods empathetically and then says to me “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t have it all. You can. I’ve never met any group of people more productive than working mothers.”. It was meant with a helpful and supportive sentiment and it was a positive thing to hear. However, I’m not sure if it was necessarily the right thing for me to here. You see, in the last 14 months I have pondered a lot on life and balance. And on that phrase that gets thrown at all new mothers:

“You can have it all.”

I have kept a Gratitude Journal since the start of 2016. Over that year it made a MASSIVE difference to my mental attitude; I now more naturally see the positive in things. My blog is a place to share thoughts and opinions. But more than that, it’s a place I record life so I can look back in the future and remember how things were. Whilst I will always have my private journals, in January 2017 I also decided to take a leaf out the books of other bloggers and create a monthly gratitude feature. Here’s what I am grateful for this month:

It’s been over 10 months now since I went back to work after my maternity leave ended. 10 months! Longer than I was pregnant with Little H. Only 3 months short of how long I was off work. By the time Christmas Day arrives, it will have been over two years since I bid everyone farewell and hobbled off to prepare myself for becoming a mum. In January my baby will turn 2! I’ll be honest, I’m in a state of disbelief about the whole thing. I’m in denial that this amount of time has passed already. It feels to be racing by.

LMEAs some of you may notice if you’ve been to my site a few times, a couple of weeks ago I rebranded. For 9 YEARS my website had been named after me (so initially angelajcook and then angelajwatling). However, over the last 15 months, since becoming a mother, I have been using my blog even more heavily than before. I wanted a name that better reflected what my site was about so I decided to rebrand it to ‘Life, Motherhood and Everything’ (a subtle nod to Douglas Adams there for any ‘Hitchhikers Guide’ fans). Although much of my site is self-coded, my blog is on a self-hosted WordPress installation and this is where a majority of my content sits. Fortunately there are lots of helpful WordPress plug-ins to help migrate. So for anyone else thinking of doing the same, here’s what I did!
