The way we eat

Sam and I were watching Mary Portas’ round-up of 2018 shopping habits the other night (What Britain Bought in 2018). One fact that she mentioned was that the average person spent £1000 a year on takeaways – about £83 per month. Some of the interviewees said they bought 2 – 3 every week. We were genuinely surprised that people buy-in food so often. Then the following morning the BBC had a headline article entitled “Children ‘exceed recommended sugar limit by

That was the year that was 2018 – a summary

Whenever I start writing my end of year summary, I always take a minute to read back over previous years. It is crazy to think that this time last year we were just building up to the arrival of our youngest family member. Fast forward 12 months and she is very much here, present and part of our family. I can obviously remember life before her but I can’t remember what it feels like. The last 12 months have been

Nine months in. Nine months out.

Last weekend I took Little Z out for a walk in the sling whilst Little H and her Dad were at the cinema. It started to sleet as we were walking and despite her snowsuit, booties and woolly hat, she look disgruntled by the cold. So I pulled her close to me to give her a smidge more warmth. We were walking a pretty standard route for us – just a loop round the local roads. But in that moment

Tales of Little Z – 7, 8 and 9 months

When I realised it was time to write the third installment of your series my Little Z, I was stunned. How are you already the ripe old age of 9 months? You are such a joy of a baby and whilst there are some ups and downs, you generally help ground us all with your happy and curious nature. You love to cuddle us all and you love to try and walk. You hate to miss out on things but

Thoughts on sleeping babes

SleepingInBed

Yesterday afternoon I had to rock Little Z to sleep. I haven’t had to do that for a long time but she was overtired after a trip to town took longer than I intended. I tried to put her down like normal but she flapped around and cried. After repeating that process several times in quick succession, it was pretty darn apparent that she needed a bit of support and fortunately Mummy-Rocking-Cuddles still carry a little bit of power in

What we’ve been doing lately #5

Time really does fly between these updates. It’s been almost a month since update #4 and now but I can’t really believe it. As always, life has been busy. But it’s been much less hectic in terms of travel. After several long distance trips over the last few months, this month we stayed at home and I was quite happy about that! In fact, when Sam went away for a few nights with work (more on that later), it seemed

What Little H did – 3.7, 3.8 & 3.9 years

Another three months have gone Little H! Time really does fly and every now and then I look at you and realise how much you’ve changed and grown. It’s easy to forget how much you are still developing when Little Z is next to you growing so rapidly, as babies do. But you feel so far from the toddler you were last summer – when I look back at pictures from our holiday to the Netherlands, you look so small.

Little Z and the cloth bum conversion

After Little H was born, it shocked me how many nappies we churned through. After a few months my brain started musing over reusable nappies so I did some Google searching. Then I got overwhelmed by where to start and I just carried on with the multi-buy Pampers. My sleep deprived brain could not cope with the research on top of all the other new learning it has to do. But it was a decision which stayed with me and

What we’ve been doing lately #4

As I write this Sam is out watching a cycling event at the Olympic Velodrome. My dinner is in the oven and it looks and sounds like the Littles might be asleep; I’ll never tempt fate and assume they are or will stay that way but at this exact moment a calm has fallen on the house. As I was washing my face, I suddenly found the desire to write a journal post after weeks of having no interest or energy.

All about making us more eco-friendly

As a long term nature and plant lover, I have always done my best to care for the environment. It has always upset me to create waste and to do things which could cause permanent damage to the world. But at the same time, it’s easy to get caught up in life and inadvertently choose convenience over sustainability. Or, even with sustainability in mind, modern life doesn’t easily present the options to live a better way. (Looked round the supermarket
