It’s February 2016 and I’ve been back at work after Maternity Leave for about three weeks. One of the female managers who I don’t really know asks me how I’m getting on. I’m honest and say it’s good to be back but it’s a bit of a shock to the system and I’m still finding my way. She nods empathetically and then says to me “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t have it all. You can. I’ve never met any group of people more productive than working mothers.”. It was meant with a helpful and supportive sentiment and it was a positive thing to hear. However, I’m not sure if it was necessarily the right thing for me to here. You see, in the last 14 months I have pondered a lot on life and balance. And on that phrase that gets thrown at all new mothers:

“You can have it all.”

I have kept a Gratitude Journal since the start of 2016. Over that year it made a MASSIVE difference to my mental attitude; I now more naturally see the positive in things. My blog is a place to share thoughts and opinions. But more than that, it’s a place I record life so I can look back in the future and remember how things were. Whilst I will always have my private journals, in January 2017 I also decided to take a leaf out the books of other bloggers and create a monthly gratitude feature. Here’s what I am grateful for this month:

I seem to rarely write a blog post spontaneously these days. Yet the events of 8-9 November in the United States have compelled me to do so. Because, quite honestly, I am finding 2016 to be a truly baffling year. I wrote back in July about my sadness over the result of the EU Referendum (or “Brexit” – a term I am frankly sick of!). As we all digested the outcome of our decision on this side of the Atlantic, attentions turned to the US Presidential race.

Nakd BarSo every month I try to post my ‘Five Favourite Finds’ for the month. They can be absolutely anything new that I have come across. The challenge: making sure I find five each month. I’m using it to try encourage myself to find new things and also share my finds with you all to save you the leg work! So without further ado and in no particular order…

EU FlagI voted ‘Remain’. I read some of the facts; Not loads but enough to know that there wasn’t anything fundamental to sway me from my gut belief we should stay. So when I woke this morning to the referendum result – the Britain had voted to leave – I was genuinely shocked. I knew it would be close, but I never thought it would go the way it did. I am open to change but I don’t think the benefits are worth the risk here. I am anxious about the years to come and the impact it will have on me and my family.

RoutineI went back to work last week after 10 days off. Once I’d got past the going-back-to-work dread I think most people feel, I realised I was happy to be back. I really enjoyed having some time off but after the Lisbon trip not going as well as planned and our routine being thrown out by travel and toddler illness, I felt much more comfortable being back in to my normal routine.

GreekYoghurtAndFruitInspired by other blogger ideas, I have decide to introduce a new feature to my site – a monthly post on my ‘Five Favourite Finds’ for the month. They can be absolutely anything new that I have come across. The challenge: making sure I find five each month. I’m hoping it will both encourage me to find new things and also share my finds with you all to save you the leg work! So without further ado and in no particular order…

As a long time commuter, I know it’s easy to dwell on the negatives of commuting: the cost, the time, the delays, the horror of being rammed next to a stranger closer than you get to most relatives… I will openly admit that the one thing I really wish I could change about my job is my commute. But…it’s not all bad. Since returning from Maternity Leave I’ve reached a new level of commute-appreciation. So next time you feel anger at having to spend in excess of an hour / day on a train for half your salary, bear these things in mind:

  1. DSC_0023_2Uninterrupted reading time: How often in life do you find yourself with a clear half an hour to read with no-one crying, nagging, grovelling for a biscuit or knowing deep-down that you should be dealing with the washing-up/ironing/dusting/folding/insert another chore from the never-ending list here. Even now I only commute three days a week, I can get an amazing chunk of my book read in my half hour train ride!;

NoDataWhen I signed up for my contract in November 2014, 500mb of data seemed fine. Through 2015 I was on Maternity Leave so I had WiFi most of every day. Then I went back to work… In February a phone ‘glitch’ meant I used up all my data because Google Play was downloading all and every app update on 4G. Argh. EE to the rescue though – they gave me an extra 500mb for free. Then last Thursday my phone alerted me to the fact I had only 100mb for 9 days. No big drama, that was enough if I was sensible.

Then on Friday ‘The Haircut’ happened…

TwitterHave you ever got to work, spent 20 mins browsing Twitter or the BBC News and then had to work at home after dinner because you did get everything you needed to done? Or have you ever watched a TV show whilst playing games on your phone only to suddenly realise the credits are rolling and you didn’t really see any of it? Or hold a conversation with your partner or friend whilst actually playing Candy Crush (which I have actually never played…) and just muttering “yeah” at sporadic intervals? If you have you’re not alone. Aside from the fact that people seem to ever be able to ‘switch off’ in the world of 2016, they also seem incapable of focusing on one thing at a time.
