Time for a new look

My website as 12 years old and started out as some (now I’ve concluded) monstrous pink and purple creation with very limited content.┬áIt’s purpose was for me to learn to code. I developed it and grew it and changed to a more retina-friendly colour theme along the way. I moved to WordPress and relished the opportunity to build my own theme. Then I started to write more and share more. Overtime, my blog became more about the content than the coding.

When I first started my website I was a coder at work. But as the years passed I moved into different roles and stopped developing at works. Without that practice, I making website tweaks took longer and were slightly harder. Throwing motherhood into the mix then gobbled up the majority of my free time so my coding skills have waned even more. For sometime now I have struggled to make the changes on my blog that I have wanted to. Then when I decided to try the beta of WordPress’s new Gutenberg editor, I discovered my theme was not compatible even in the slightest. So I was left with a couple of choices:

  1. Find and make the time to learn how to code my theme from scratch and make it Gutenberg compatible;
  2. Find an alternative ‘off the shelf’ theme that I could customise to use instead.

It didn’t take me long to realise that I needed to go with option 2. It was a tough one to accept – it’s made me really face into the fact that I don’t know how to code these days. I mean, I know the theory and I could easily learn given time and space. But development tools and languages move at such a pace now that it’s impossible to keep up unless it’s your day job and / or you devote all your free time to learning. Sam has realised the same with developing and enhancing his site; it’s something we both find it a little sad but such is life.

However, I quickly moved on from my upset when I started tweaking and configuring my new theme. It’s awesome! All of the things I wanted to do can be done through toggles, image uploads or selecting from drop-downs! Originally I had wanted to migrate my self-coded styling. But after realising my brown-ish colour theme had been around in various guises for a decade, I knew it was time for a refresh! And I love it. I’m enjoying my new look. I’m enjoying having a completely responsive website without having to make any changes myself. And I’m enjoying just being able to focus back on the writing again. Well, during the little time I can find!
