My Top 10 Online Reads #4

Top10OnlineReadsWelcome to my monthly feature in which I share some of my favourite online articles for the month. I read a lot of blog posts and articles online and whilst I share a lot of them through tweets, it’s easy to miss them and hard to come back to them at another time. This is a list of my top ten reads for the month, a mixture of formal news articles and blog posts. Enjoy!

  1. The dangers of comparing babies…: When I read this post it really rang true of how parenting seems to go from the moment a baby is born. It never seems to stop and I really try to stop myself from comparing H with others as I mused in a blog post last year – Trying not to be a goal driven parent;
  2. Raising strong daughters: How to boost girl’s self-esteem: I don’t want to overthink my parenting but conversely I also worry about not supporting H properly as a girl in a world striving towards equality. This is another interesting read about giving support as she grows up;
  3. Stranger Danger: I’ve seen this video before but seeing it again in Cuddle Fairy’s post now H is growing-up fills me with fear! It’s one for all parents to watch as a reminder to be forever vigilant about teaching children about stranger danger;
  4. Make punctuality a priority: I’ve shared at least one post from Richard Branson before because I like his approach to things. I completely agree that people should refocus on being punctual. I’m guilty as charged with this and with a toddler it’s not always possible. But I need to plan ahead better and definitely avoid doing it at work;
  5. Dear Crappy Parent: I first read this last year and found it again when it popped-up on my Twitter Timehop. Everyone should read this and, as a result, stop passing judgment on others based on brief glimpses of someone else’s life. Okay so we’ll probably all make the occasional remark but keep it to your best friend or spouse and quickly move on!;
  6. 12 Famous Moms Who Couldn’t Care Less If Their Bodies ‘Bounce Back’: Be it right or wrong, celebrity carries power. So some of these comments made my high celebrity woman will hopefully slowly stop society from expecting mothers from having to get their ‘body back’;
  7. The Toddler’s Favourite Books: Age 2: I wanted to share this post from Lynn because it had a great list of toddler books. I have put a load on a list of present ideas for H;
  8. Mothers’ pay lags far behind men: Another angle on the women’s pay discussion. Not only is it because women are in low paid jobs, but they typically take working-hour reductions when becoming parents and jobs don’t accommodate part timers;
  9. Lie back and think of your mother: After finishing ‘The Year of Living Danishly’, I have been reading some of Helen Russell’s newpaper features. This one made me chuckle because of the video is talks about. Take a watch and have a little laugh!;
  10. Mountains of Marmite: unwanted gifts from home plague Brits abroad: Another Helen Russell read which tickled me. This time it’s because whenever anyone came to visit me whilst I was living in Spain, I’d always get Marmite. Fortunately I had a Spanish-English friend who took the spare off my hands.
