Slow living – how it’s helped me do less to accomplish more

Over three years ago now, I read about a concept called ‘Slow Parenting’ – a topic which I researched quite a lot and wrote a blog post about at the time. The premise is about not feeling the need to over-schedule our children and give them time to just ‘be’. It’s something that has stayed with me ever since then and an approach I have become more and more converted to since becoming a mother for a second time. With

The daily reset

Without a doubt, my favourite social media platform is Instagram. For years and years it was Twitter but after my sister convinced me that my blog should have an Instagram presence, I set-up a new account and haven’t looked back. Admittedly I don’t really tend to post pictures of my own these days, but there is something so alluring about the beautifully curated squares shared by others that draws me back. I rarely go a week without finding one of

A balance of relief and sadness: The realities of mothering small children

SleepingInBed

Little Z has just started self-feeding with a spoon over the last fortnight and she’s got really good really quickly!. Now, unless she instructs me, I am no longer allowed to feed her. For the most part that is fine by me – I can actually eat my own food . But I did also feel a small tinge of sadness when I realised that a milestone had been hit and there is no going back. Little H has also

What we’ve been doing lately #8

Since my last update at the start of March, our weekly routine that sees the girls going to nursery and me heading to work has become a bit more normal. After a couple of tougher nursery weeks during weeks three and four, Little Z got back into the rhythm and has seemed to enjoy her time there since. Her key worker has said that her personality is really starting to shine through and most afternoons when I collect her she

Time to learn like a baby?

The phrase ‘sleep like a baby’ has been around for goodness knows how long and is usually used after a wonderfully delightful nights sleep. Clearly the people who use this phrase are not parents because let’s be honest, I don’t really want to sleep like a baby. They spend a lot of the night huffing and puffing, waking and sometimes crying, feeding or at worst dealing with the discomfort of teething. Sure babies get a lot of sleep but their

One year of two.

Shortly after Little Z was born, I read an article by a mother saying the 1st birthday of her second child was a huge milestone because. as parents, she and her husband had survived. They knew they could do it. Now I’m not sure as we hit that same 12-month marker that I’ll be letting my guard down and assuming we’ve ‘got it’. After all, complacency is the downfall of a parent in my view. But… I do agree with

That was the year that was 2018 – a summary

Whenever I start writing my end of year summary, I always take a minute to read back over previous years. It is crazy to think that this time last year we were just building up to the arrival of our youngest family member. Fast forward 12 months and she is very much here, present and part of our family. I can obviously remember life before her but I can’t remember what it feels like. The last 12 months have been

When the Control Freak lost control

Before you read the title and think I’ve gone off on some ‘Bad Moms’ type stunt, it’s not that sort of post. As much as it would be amusing to go wild like that* it’s neither in my nature nor something that I’d probably enjoy for long. No, this post is not about throwing my caution to the wind and releasing control. This is about control being yanked brutally away from me by my two young offspring. * The supermarket

Your face

Little H, I was cleaning your teeth the other day when the sun caught your face. It made me cup your face in my hands and turn it up so I could look at you. To really look at one of my favourite faces in the whole world. Your soft young skin and toothpaste round your mouth. Your grey-blue eyes ever scrutinising the world. Your tiny nose wrinkling up as you ask me “What you doin’?”.

What we’ve been doing lately #1

It occurred to me the other day that I have stopped using my blog to simply just record what has been going on in life. Every post now seems to have a ‘topic’ which is fun but I want to be able to look back and remember what the day-to-day was like. So  I’m going to let myself get back to some general diary-esque writing again. Not least because the last few weeks have been a fun yet challenging in
