I have kept a Gratitude Journal since the start of 2016. Over that year it made a MASSIVE difference to my mental attitude; I now more naturally see the positive in things. My blog is a place to share thoughts and opinions. But more than that, it’s a place I record life so I can look back in the future and remember how things were. Whilst I will always have my private journals, I also decided to take a leaf out the books of other bloggers and create a monthly gratitude feature. Here’s what I am grateful for this month:

Top10OnlineReadsWelcome to my monthly feature in which I share some of my favourite online articles for the month. I read a lot of blog posts and articles online and whilst I share a lot of them through tweets, it’s easy to miss them and hard to come back to them at another time. This is a list of my top ten reads for the month, a mixture of formal news articles and blog posts. Enjoy!

Did anyone else notice how a couple of weeks ago, someone suddenly started turning the sun on later and later in the morning. AND started turning it off earlier and earlier in the evening? The horror! It happens every year but yet it always shocks and surprises me. My head expects it to happen gradually. But it doesn’t. In a matter of days, I will go from admiring my garden whilst washing-up after dinner to realising my kitchen window needs a polish as I stare at my blurry-reflection on a pitch-black background. I actually love autumn, but I really miss the light.

H is almost fourteen months old and is still on two naps a day. From everything I’ve read, and from what her baby peers are doing, it’s common for babies/toddlers to stick with two naps until anywhere between 12 – 18 months approximately. At the start of this year she actually started sleeping longer for her naps too – the effort of walking more and more taking it’s toll on her energy stores. But over the last few weeks, we’ve had days where a long morning nap has resulted in over an hour of afternoon cot play…but no sleep.

Wakey Wakey

I’m massively tempting fate by committing these words to digital ‘paper’ but as much as I miss sleeping soundly through the night I have a confession to make…[in a whisper] I sort of like the nights where H needs me. I’ll be clear at this point; I do not mean those nights where I get woken up every 10 minutes from the moment I first lay my head on my pillow through until the birds decide it’s time to get up (which isn’t that early in the winter!). Those nights never have and never will hold any fondness in my heart but rather induce a slight shiver down my spine when I recall them. No the nights I am referring to are those where she just needs a drink, a bit of bojela or even a little cuddle. Now those nights sometimes tire me, but I don’t really mind.

2015 has been another challenging year, but more for happy reasons that sad, especially when compared against last year. Whilst the losses of 2014 are still very much felt, the arrival of H at the start of the year brought a bit of sunshine back in to life again. It’s pushed me to many extremes but it’s ultimately been a wonderful year so here is the summary!

After H was born, all I wanted to do was sleep. I wasn’t greedy in my desires – I only wanted a few consecutive hours. But it didn’t happen. I was exhausted from giving birth and from a stomach virus I’d caught in hospital but her needs came first to the extent where after feeding her I’d literally collapse asleep on the bed unable to soothe her as she cried, struggling to sleep.

When my Maternity Leave start date finally arrived back in December 2014 I was ready; Painful SPD making walking hard, a rapidly growing bump and even more rapidly diminishing energy levels meant I just wanted to rest. On December 19th I was relived to wake-up knowing that I had no imminent commitments to worry about. But I was in no way blind to the hard work that was due to come a few weeks in to the New Year. What I didn’t know though was what to expect; What would that work be? How hard and tiring would I find it?
